As part of the Northern Gateway development, Jomast Developments has transformed the former Co-op store on Elder Way into a 92-bedroom Premier Inn hotel, signalling the start of Chesterfield’s world class visitor economy journey.
Speaking at the annual Chesterfield Investment Summit last year, James Berresford, Chair of the Derbyshire Culture, Heritage, Arts and Tourism Board, revealed that converting just 5% of Chesterfield’s day visitors into overnight stays would transform the town’s visitor economy.
Around 200 beds have been created in the Premier Inn, and a further 2,300 beds will be added to the Borough’s accommodation offering over the next 30 months as the hotels at Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort start to come out of the ground.
The new premier inn hotel opened in April, creating a total of 35 new jobs, 17 of which went to candidates from sector-based work academies.
Toby Perkins MP, who opened the new hotel said: “I am thrilled that Premier Inn have shown confidence in our town. People across Chesterfield will be pleased to see this iconic building being put to an exciting new use in a way that also strengthens the tourism and dining offer. This is another example of the confidence that investors have in local people and the environment that we have here in Chesterfield.”
An additional 86-bedroom hotel will also be created in the phase one of Basin Square at Chesterfield Waterside, and there are plans for hotel and lodge accommodation at the £200million Peak Resort development. The new hotels will add to Chesterfield’s existing offer in the town which includes the premium four-star Casa Hotel and Ringwood Hall.

The multi-storey, which will open in May, will provide safe and secure parking as well as disabled parking, parent and child spaces, electric vehicle charging and spaces for larger vehicles. An additional multi-storey car park is planned for Basin Square.
As part of the vision for Northern Gateway, it is designed to complement proposals for Chesterfield Waterside and the infrastructure related to the arrival of HS2. The development of Northern Gateway will provide an attractive and vibrant approach to the Basin Square neighbourhood at Chesterfield Waterside.
The Northern Gateway project is funded by a Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund grant of £5.83 million. The council has contributed £6.5 million to the scheme with the Co-op redevelopment being paid for by the private sector.
